Jay A. Nelson, Ph.D., is CEO of the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Center and Professor, Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Nelson is also the CEO and Founder of VGTI Florida®, a Florida-funded expansion of the OHSU’s highly successful Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute.
In 2009, Dr. Nelson led OHSU, the University of Washington with a number of partner institutes, to successful granting of the Pacific NorthWest Regional Center of Excellence (PNWRCE). The primary focus of the PNWRCE is aimed at combatting emerging or re-emerging infectious disease which poses serious threat to human health. From 1998-2000 he was Head of Pathology and Immunology Division, Oregon Regional Primate Center.
Prior to joining OHSU, Dr. Nelson was Associate Member, Department of Immunology, Research Institute of Scripps Clinic, and Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, University of California at San Diego. Dr. Nelson received a B.S. degree in biology from California State University, Hayward, and a Ph.D. in microbiology from Oregon State University.
